The Brewery

The idea of having our own brewery has been in our heads since we launched our first beer, The Black Pot, but we really started thinking about it in the beginning of 2018.

Living in a small town near the Ceahlau mountain means fresh air, great views, many things to do (especially in summer) but there is not much social life. So, this was our first question: build a brewery in the area through which we make the decision to stay here or move to a big city where you have many more opportunities, give up on this idea / dream and continue life? You already know the answer… 😊

The next difficult question was whether to rent a space or build one. I’ll tell you, building a brewery from scratch and being involved in all stages is pure madness (I don’t think I would do this again) especially if you don’t have enough money to afford to do everything turnkey. In the first phase we looked for a space to rent but the few found / available looked awful, not to mention the very large sums of money we had to spend for the arrangement and in the end the space was not even ours so, having an available land we decided to risk absolutely everything we have and build from scratch.

The chosen location is 10km from the town of Bicaz (on the way to Lacu Rosu) in a small village called Neagra. From there forward I don’t even want to think about how many things were planned and done and how many weeks I ate from my architect / brother-in-law life (thanks again Justin), it would take me a few days to write non-stop but I will present the most important ones.

March 2019 – we actually started the ground works (we started the documents part in November 2018) and although what we built here should not have been a problem, being a small town, labor and companies (especially those serious and with somewhat affordable prices) are very difficult to fiind.

July 2019 – we started assembling the metal structure and sandwich panels. This is a fairly easy and quick step if the structure is properly made and all parts fit together. At that time we were already easily overwhelmed by the situation because we had to think about a lot of things at the same time (electrical works, installations, sewerage, windows, brewing equipment acquisition, a bank to give us a loan, fence and these are just the first that came to mind).

January 2020 – before all the madness with the virus started, our equipment arrived and after a long day we managed to squeeze it all in (thank you Stefan, Octav, Andrei, Itei for help otherwise we would have stayed with the brewing equipment outside).

May 2020 – for most of the part we finished the interior and exterior works and we were able to start the authorization process.

October 2020 – We managed to obtain the authorization and starting with November 1 we can brew beer in our own brewery. Yeeeey!
